PANS/PANDAS patients are commonly misdiagnosed with Autism, Tourette’s Syndrome, OCD, bipolar disorder, ADHD, Oppositional Defiance, or with an eating disorder. However, PANS/PANDAS patients can have co-occurring conditions of Autism, ADHD, autoimmune illnesses, immunodeficiencies, and more. PANS (Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) is a newer term used to describe the larger class of acute-onset OCD cases and includes all cases of abrupt onset – not just those associated with strep infections. Lyme disease, staph infections, mycoplasma infections such as walking pneumonia and rheumatic fever have been linked with PANS. PANS (Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) is the generally recognized label for the same symptoms in a child without the association of a strep infection.
